A New Game To Try

Since it’s the school holidays I thought I’d tell you about an online game which I discovered via Tim Ryland’s Blog. The game is called Ikariam and it’s about life in ancient times. You need to register (it’s free) and then you play the game online.

The sound of the sea, a white sandy beach and sun! On a small island somewhere in the Mediterranean, an ancient civilisation arises. Under your leadership an era of wealth and discovery begins. Welcome to Ikariam.

From Tim Ryland’s It’s a free web based game that allows you to start and expand a civilization. The cool thing about it is that you can login, set something in motion (e.g. upgrade the town hall) and then log off again.

The game keeps going while you’re away, so that you can leave it for a few hours, days or even weeks, and when you log back in again, your town hall is built, your citizens are happily collecting wood, making wine from the grapes they’ve collected and having a drink in the tavern when they finish work.

One of the most important things to do in the game is to establish a research centre, where your citizens can find out about the many different skills, trades and abilities that are available in the game.

Research can follow a number of different paths. You can choose to focus on your military, which will enable you to protect yourself from would-be attackers; or maybe you want to focus your attention on the sciences, allowing you access to new items such as paper and ink, which will allow you to form better trade agreements, and so on.

What makes this game so enticing, is that while there is a huge amount you can do with it (some features taking over a year to establish), it’s actually very simple to play. Most of it’s pretty intuitive. If there’s something you aren’t too sure of, there’s also extensive help documentation.

To read more of what Tim has to say about this game go to his blog post.

Sweatshops

I’ve just found a game that might teach you something about life in third world countries, Sim Sweatshop.

This is a great simulation and brilliant tool. The flash 9 based site hosts a simulation of a sports shoe making sweatshop. The successfull worker (I’m not one of them) will make atleast 3 shoes a day to earn his $6.05 wage. making 2 shoes 1/2’s his or her pay packet.

You are invited to enter the world of the sweatshop and become a factory worker. Do you accept the challenge? Can you tirelessly make sports shoes for less than a dollar an hour as you struggle to support your family?

How Well Do You Know Your World?

Here’s an entertaining way of finding out how little you/we know about the locations of places on our planet. This site, Traveler IQ Challenge, quizzes you about locations of cities in the world. There is a time limit and you progress through levels. This is an educational way to fill in those ‘dull, boring / wet days’ that are likely to occur at some time these holidays!

You also have the option of other challenges and can also add it to Facebook so you can challenge others!

Power Generation

I found a link to a new ‘power’ game on Louise Starkey’s blog Teaching in the Digital Age.

Another power company has developed an interactive website targeted for use in schools- this one is called generation island. Students can explore the use of different types of power generation.

This game could be useful to thse of you who are looking at future forms of energy use in New Zealand. BTW there are also other links on the site which may be useful.

Gaming

Another games link from Paul Wilkinson. I rediscovered Electrocity today and have signed up for our class. The link to it is on our Maths wiki under Resources. It would be useful checking it out as there are prizes!

I’m starting to get taken by online games that I can see have a genuine educative purpose. Electrocity has me captivated.

This is a new one to me. It has five different disaster scenarios and a time limit before disaster strikes. You have a budget and have to prepare the location for the coming disaster. This would fit well into any disaster unit at the upper end of primary or lower high school level.

Search Engine Quiz Game

I found this at Google Blogoscoped. I recommend that you check out their blog as they have a lot of interesting stuff.

At the Flash-based Search Engine Smackdown game, you are entering a fight as one of the big figures in search – like Larry Page or Sergey Brin – and need to answer a series of search-related questions to score hits. A highscore table track the best winning times… [Via Barry Schwartz.]
