Times Tables

Do you need to learn your times tables? You might want to try the ideas in this video!

In this video I show you how to drill multiplication tables effectively – not with random drill, but with a three-step approach that keeps the drilling in a context, in a structure. The three steps are: 1) Skip counting pattern using a number line; 2) the actual multiplication tables practice; and 3) practicing backwards.

A Challenge – Pi

There are people , even in NZ, who are able to recite the digits in the pi actual number. Can you?

Here is a post from Bud Hunt

Today, 3.14, is honored by many of my math colleagues as Pi Day.  In honor of them, and of a fine and playful mathematical constant (Pie aren’t square, they’re round.), I present to you Pi to a 1,000 digits:

Powers Of Ten

I was shown this video at the GATE meeting I was at yesterday and thought you would like to view it too. What do you think?

Powers of Ten is a short film by Charles and Ray Eames, whose work you may have previously sat in. The film starts on a picnic blanket in Chicago and zooms out 10x every 10 seconds until the entire universe (more or less) is visible. And then they zoom all the way back down into the nucleus of an atom.

As it is not yet available to embed, you can view it here http://www.fugly.com/videos/4467/powers-of-ten-video.html

If it takes too long to buffer, you might like to try the alternative site offered but the quality doesn’t seem to be as good. As I have downloaded it, I will make it available to you in the class folder on the server but leave any comments here.

Maths Lines

You must check this out!

Do you think you could use this in your work? Is it faster than doing it as an algorithm?
