How to Save the Planet

Another interesting presentation from the Slideshare Design competition. While it gives some thought provoking ideas about the need to save the planet, it also gives you some ideas on how to creatively present ideas.

Thirst

Most of us have heard of the concern about a growing world wide food shortage but did you know that a shortage of water is alos a major concern? Have a look at this well designed slideshow which gives yo some interesting facts about water and its use worldwide.

New Tools

I have seen both these two tools (Visual Mapping and Multimedia News) before but haven’t written about but after reading a post on Connecting Through Conversations I realised that these may actually be useful to some of you in the inquiry you are involved in at present. It’s worth taking a look at them to see if they can add to information you have already collected.

http://www.sasi.group.shef.ac.uk/worldmapper/index.html - Great visual mapping tool, collection of world maps where territories are resized according to subject of interest. 336 total maps, also available as PDF’s to download. Here is an example of from the web site. Worldmapper posters depicting nuclear waste, carbon emissions and HIV/AIDS were displayed at the recent Glastonbury festival. They were used as part of the ‘Give Geography its Place’ campaign. The photos were taken by Daniel Raven-Ellison, one of the campaign members.

http://www.daylife.com/highlights - Daylife is a multimedia news site which highligts news stories from around the world. Top of the page has tabs for content, main page is an image and along the bottom are thumbnails representing stories that are covered.

3D World Weather

Check out this cool 3D map showing the weather all around the world.

You have the option of viewing the temperatures in Celsius or Fahrenheit.

Amazing World Clock

You just have to take a look at this, from think:lab by Christian

The first which caught my eye is entitled “World Clock”. What does it do? The best answer I can offer is “check it out for yourself…and let your teacher/student imagination run wild”; the other answer I can offer for those short on time/imagination is that it keeps a up-to-the-moment tally on some wild stats that define the human experience in ‘clock’ style. Tick, tick, tick…

This is amazing – just sit and watch the changes!

Affluenza!

African Watering Hole

Tech Savvy Educator points people to a site that allows you to view an African watering hole.
The site streams live video and audio, allowing you to hear the birds, insects, and animals. My son has been peeking in for the last several days and have seen many animals and lots of birds. Many times nothing is going on but you can still close your eyes and listen to the birds and insects. The site is found at http://www.africam.com/. Click on Nkorho Stream in the upper left-hand corner of the page.

Amazing World Views

You just have to look at this PowerPoint (Mr Monk originally sent it to me). It is an amazing view of the earth showing day and night as you’ve never seen it.

Just download it and double click it and it should load automatically. Use the spacebar or mouse button to go through the images.

You can also view this at school. I have saved it into our Share Room 3 folder.
