Room 3’s Blog

This blog is created for and by the year 7 & 8 students of the accelerate class at Te Awamutu Intermediate, New Zealand.

Bound Feet

An old custom in China was the binding of the feet of females. We did have a small novel in the classroom about this, written in ’story style’.

Tonight I found a blog which has some pictures of what the feet of these women actually looked like. Rather than copying them here I am giving you the link, Bound Feet in China,so that if you are interested you can see for yourself. Remember it is an old custom!

I am pretty sure that this custom is now longer widely practised in China but there are probably some areas which have been unable to let go of  this tradition.

BTW There are other links to topics about China on this page.

An American in China

I have just read about a blog by an American Teacher who is currently teaching in China, Viking in China.

Fortunately for me and my students, my friend and colleague, Jason Long is teaching in China this spring and sharing his observations and experiences via a blog titled Viking in China. In his most recent blog entries Jason shares his observations and experiences regarding the Olympics. One of the more interesting pieces of news from Jason is that some Chinese are boycotting American and European goods in response to the protests in the United States and Europe.

I think it would be worth some of you reading Jason’s posts of his observations and interactions with the Chinese people. This may give you another perspective of life in China for the ‘ordinary’ people! If you have any questions you might like to post them on Jason’s blog.

China

After our class discussion today about China I opened my RSS feed (don’t worry if you don’t know what that is!) and found a link to The International School in Beijing!. Now this might be just the place to try and make some contacts and find out some answers to our questions about what is actually happening in China. Please do not contact them until you have checked with me first about what you are saying/asking!!

THEN I had another link to Beijing Youth Voices which gives an account of the common daily life of a senior Chinese student. This could also be an interesting read for you to get an insight into life in China.
